Meritus Technology

Special Vessel Fabrication

Chinese yards now build the majority of the world's offshore support and specialised vessel tonnage. The commercial case is settled; the risk that remains is execution — specification drift, sub-supplier substitution and documentation that does not survive an audit.

Meritus works alongside owners and yards on special vessel programmes, sourcing equipment packages and sub-assemblies and providing the independent inspection layer that keeps what is delivered aligned with what was ordered.

Capabilities

Vessel types we support

Offshore support vessels including PSV and AHTS; construction and service operation vessels (CSOV, SOV) for offshore wind; cable-lay and installation vessels; tugs and workboats; barges and accommodation units; aquaculture and fish farm units; specialised cargo and gas-fuelled vessels.

Equipment and sub-assembly sourcing

Rather than duplicating what the yard does, we concentrate on the equipment scopes where substitution and quality risk are highest: deck machinery and winches, mooring and anchoring systems, cranes and handling equipment, piping spools and pressure parts, structural sub-assemblies and outfitting packages.

Inspection and specification control

We verify that the equipment installed is the equipment specified — make, model and certificate — and that any proposed substitution reaches you as a documented request rather than a discovery at delivery. Every order runs through the same quality chain: shop pre-qualification, material traceability against mill certificates, in-process and final inspection, and a documentation pack released before shipment.

Failure modes we inspect for

Equipment substitution presented as an equivalent — a different winch brake rating, a crane from another maker, a pump one frame size down. Certificates issued for a model number that differs from the one installed. Deck machinery FAT witnessed on a test bench rather than under representative load. And spares lists that quietly omit the items with the longest lead times.

How an order runs

Enquiry and specification review; shop shortlisting against the actual scope rather than a general vendor list; quotation with the inspection plan priced in, not added later; kick-off with agreed hold and witness points; in-process inspection at those points; final inspection, document pack release and shipment; arrival support if anything is queried. On vessel programmes we agree the substitution protocol in writing at kick-off, so any proposed change reaches you as a request rather than as a discovery at delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Why do owners use an intermediary when the yard is already contracted?

Because the yard's incentive is completion and the owner's is conformity. An independent inspection layer checks that what was specified is what is installed, particularly across the sub-supplier tier the yard controls but the owner does not see.

Which vessel types does this cover?

PSV and AHTS, CSOV and SOV for offshore wind, cable-lay and installation vessels, tugs and workboats, barges and accommodation units, aquaculture units, and gas-fuelled and specialised cargo vessels.

Does Meritus replace the yard's own QA?

No. It supplements it with an independent check answerable to the owner rather than to the build schedule.

What is verified on deck machinery?

Make, model and certificate against the specification; FAT under representative load; brake and holding capacity records; and the documentation chain for load-bearing components.
