A wind tower is a deceptively simple structure with two unforgiving details: the circumferential welds that carry fatigue load for twenty-five years, and the flange flatness that determines whether the sections bolt up on site.

Flange and dimensional control
Flange flatness and parallelism decide whether a tower assembles or waits. We witness flange measurement after welding and after any heat treatment or straightening, check ovality and roundness against tolerance, and verify bolt-hole pattern and pitch — because a flange that measures well in isolation can still fail to mate with the section above it.
Welding, NDT and coating
Longitudinal and circumferential welds are inspected to the specified NDT extent, with the procedures reviewed against the fatigue design assumptions. Coating is checked for surface preparation, profile and DFT at defined stages, since a coating failure on an offshore tower is a vessel-mobilisation cost, not a touch-up. Every order runs through the same quality chain: shop pre-qualification, material traceability against mill certificates, in-process and final inspection, and a documentation pack released before shipment.
Failure modes we inspect for
Flange flatness measured before the final straightening operation rather than after. Ovality within tolerance at one orientation and out at another, because only one measurement was taken. Coating DFT reported as an average that conceals thin readings at edges and welds. And forgings whose grain structure was never verified, which matters more on flanges than most buyers realise.
How an order runs
Enquiry and specification review; shop shortlisting against the actual scope rather than a general vendor list; quotation with the inspection plan priced in, not added later; kick-off with agreed hold and witness points; in-process inspection at those points; final inspection, document pack release and shipment; arrival support if anything is queried. On towers the release conditions are flange measurement after all forming and heat treatment, NDT to the specified extent, and coating records per stage.

What decides whether tower sections assemble on site?
Flange flatness and parallelism, plus ovality and bolt-hole pattern accuracy. These are measured after all forming, welding and straightening — a flange that measured well earlier can move.
Can Chinese fabricators meet EN 1090 requirements?
Yes, and many hold the certification. Meritus verifies the certification is current and covers the execution class the project actually requires, rather than assuming it.
