Subsea Grapnels for Cable Laying: Engineering by Seabed and Operation

December 25, 2025 · 2 min read

A global offshore contractor delivering a critical underwater cable-laying project faced variable seabeds (rocky, sandy, mixed and soft), buried and out-of-service subsea assets, zero tolerance for offshore downtime, and high cost and long lead times from legacy suppliers. The objective was to localise grapnel supply to China without compromising engineering integrity or offshore performance.

The Meritus role

Meritus acted as an engineering and delivery partner rather than only a supplier: design adaptation and optimisation, engineering review against seabed and operation phase, fabrication control and QA/QC in China, marine coating selection, FAT, certification, logistics and delivery. The aim was grapnels that perform reliably where inspection is impossible.

A grapnel suite by seabed and operation

  • Rocky or coral seabeds: Rennie and Gifford-type grapnels with optimised fluke geometry and high-strength steel for impact loads.
  • Sandy or soft seabeds: sandpoint and spearpoint grapnels with reinforced penetration prongs for recovering self-buried cables.
  • Cutting and recovery: flatfish-style grapnels that reduce snagging and load spikes.
  • Detrenching: detrenching grapnels with controlled penetration and shear-pin overload protection.

Structural engineering and load control

  • Working load limit defined, with proof testing at 150 to 200 percent
  • Fatigue- and abrasion-resistant materials
  • WPS and PQR qualified for cyclic towing loads
  • Stress-critical detailing

Deliveries came with GA drawings, EN 10204 3.1 certification, proof-load and FAT records, and offshore-ready lifting and packing.

Coating and system thinking

Subsea failures are driven by corrosion and abrasion more often than by design load, so coating systems were specified by immersion duration, seabed abrasion severity and deck handling exposure. Beyond the grapnels, the package included high-load shackles and connecting links, grapnel ropes for deepwater work, ground chains, swivels, ballast, wear parts and spares, which reduced offshore downtime across multi-run campaigns.

The result was lower cost, better penetration and stability, faster delivery with full QA/QC and lower offshore risk.
