Cargo Handling System Fabrication
A cargo handling system is where a gas carrier earns or loses money. Loading and discharge rates, custody-transfer accuracy and emergency shutdown response are all set by equipment that has to work in cryogenic service, first time, for twenty years.
Meritus sources cargo handling packages and their components from Chinese shops and OEM partners — whole skids where that makes sense, individual items where you already have a preferred vendor list. We verify what arrives against what was specified.
Capabilities
- Deepwell and submerged cargo pumps
- Cargo compressors and drivers
- Manifolds, crossovers and presentation flanges
- ESD systems and valve actuation
- Custody transfer measurement skids
- Vapour return, inerting, spray and cool-down lines
- Cryogenic functional testing witnessed
- Interface documentation coordinated across vendors
Scope we cover
Deepwell and submerged cargo pumps; cargo compressors and their drivers; manifolds, crossovers and presentation flanges; ESD and ESD-linked valve actuation; custody transfer measurement skids; vapour return and inerting lines; spray and cool-down systems; cargo tank instrumentation including level, pressure and temperature.
Integration and controls
Where a package spans several vendors, the integration risk sits in the interfaces — signal lists, actuator response times, valve fail positions. We coordinate the interface documentation between suppliers and check it against your cause-and-effect matrix before anything is released for production, rather than discovering the mismatch at commissioning.
Inspection and testing
Cryogenic service means functional testing at temperature, not just hydrostatic proof. We witness pump performance curves, valve cryogenic seat-tightness testing and ESD response timing, and hold shipment until the punch list is closed. Every order runs through the same quality chain: shop pre-qualification, material traceability against mill certificates, in-process and final inspection, and a documentation pack released before shipment.
Failure modes we inspect for
Cargo pumps tested on water at ambient and presented as proof of cryogenic performance. Valves whose seat-tightness certificate was issued at room temperature for a service that runs at −163 °C. ESD response times measured on a bench rather than through the installed actuator and its air supply. And instrument ranges that match the datasheet but not the tank they will sit on.
How an order runs
Enquiry and specification review; shop shortlisting against the actual scope rather than a general vendor list; quotation with the inspection plan priced in, not added later; kick-off with agreed hold and witness points; in-process inspection at those points; final inspection, document pack release and shipment; arrival support if anything is queried. For cargo handling the decisive witness points are pump performance testing, valve cryogenic testing and the ESD cause-and-effect walkthrough.

Frequently asked questions
Can a complete cargo handling system be sourced from China?
Yes. Meritus sources complete packages where the arrangement suits it, and individual items where you already have an approved vendor list — the verification approach is the same either way.
How is cryogenic valve tightness verified?
By testing at service temperature, not ambient. Meritus witnesses cryogenic seat-tightness testing on gas-service valves and rejects certificates issued only at room temperature.
Who coordinates the interfaces between different vendors?
Meritus does. Where a package spans several suppliers, we collect and reconcile the interface documentation — signal lists, actuator response, valve fail positions — against your cause-and-effect matrix before production release.
What documentation comes with a cargo handling package?
Mill and material certificates, welding and NDT records, pump and valve test reports, ESD timing records, and the inspection release — indexed to the items actually shipped.
