A Crane Runway Is One System: Rail, Clips, Pads, Sole Plates and Anchors

September 16, 2026 · 2 min read

A crane runway is one system. The rail, the clips that hold it down, the pads under it, the sole plates and the anchors are designed together, wear together and are replaced together. Buying them from five suppliers means five inspection plans, five document packages and five shipments that all have to land in the same shutdown window.

Meritus Technology supplies the complete crane runway from one source, inspected as one system, for port operators, terminal maintenance teams and EPC contractors.

What the runway package covers

  • Crane rail: CR80, CR100, CR120 and CR140 to IS 3443, and rails for KR70 to KR140 runways, in 6 to 12 m lengths. Where the design allows, Chinese QU70 to QU120 rails to YB/T 5055 can also be offered.
  • Clips: weldable crane rail clips with 300 kN admissible side load.
  • Pads: steel-reinforced elastomer rail pads, approximately 7 mm thick.
  • Sole plates: 25 mm, hot-dip galvanised, with clip bases pre-welded to your drawing.
  • Anchors: M24 Grade 8.8 anchor bolts, M16 levelling screws and non-shrink grout.

Why one package matters

Runways rarely fail because of one bad part. They fail at the interfaces: a clip base welded for a different rail foot width, a pad thickness that changes the rail height the crane was set to, a sole plate hole pattern that does not match the anchors already cast into the beam. When each part comes from a different supplier, each one can pass its own inspection and the runway still does not fit on site.

In one package, the rail profile, clip, pad, sole plate and anchor pattern are checked against the same runway drawing before production starts, and the parts arrive together.

How it is inspected

Meritus inspectors test every part at source against your inspection and test plan, with EN 10204 3.1 certificates and third-party witness where you specify it. Rail is checked for chemistry, hardness, profile and straightness; clips, pads and sole plates are checked dimensionally against the runway drawing; anchor bolts are checked against their property class certificate.
