Rapid Work-Class ROV Support for an Offshore Cable-Lay Campaign
November 18, 2025 · 2 min read
A subsea cable-laying contractor contacted Meritus late in its planning phase with a serious problem. The vessel schedule was fixed. A pre-lay grapnel run (PLGR), route clearance and as-laid inspection were mandatory. Its own ROV spread would not be available in time. It needed a work-class ROV on short-term lease, mobilised from China with LARS, TMS and crew support, within days rather than weeks.
The solution
Through our subsea partner network, Meritus identified a suitable deep-water work-class ROV package and aligned it with the vessel schedule and operational needs:
- System selected on water depth, tooling and survey requirements
- Flexible lease matched to the campaign duration
- Mobilisation of ROV, TMS, LARS and spares coordinated to the vessel's sailing window
- Technical interfaces aligned with the client's survey spread and the DP vessel's power and communications
The client completed PLGR, route clearance and post-lay inspection on time, without rescheduling the vessel or reducing inspection scope.
Key technical data
ROV: 115 kW (150 hp); depth rating 3,000 m; 2.95 × 1.90 × 1.85 m, about 4,300 kg; payload 420 kg with about 200 L internal free volume for tooling; seven thrusters; 5-function and 7-function hydraulic manipulators; two valve packs, each with ten bi-directional proportional valves (5 L/min); 220 VAC and 24 VDC supplies for sonar, USBL, altimeter and gyro; eight camera inputs and nine dimmable lights up to 1,500 W in total.
TMS: depth rating 3,000 m; 500 m tether, 40 mm diameter or less; SWL 12 t at the lift point and 10 t at the latch.
LARS: A-frame rated working load 10 t with a dynamic coefficient of 1.7; winch maximum load 150 kN with 3,300 m wire capacity.
This configuration gave enough power and payload for PLGR tools, route-clearance equipment and high-quality visual and survey inspection, while remaining efficient to mobilise.
