From Buying Parts to Engineering the Supply Chain: A Pump Package Case

November 30, 2025 · 2 min read

A waste treatment plant was struggling with recurring failures on its existing pump package. The previous supplier's equipment ran well at first, then suffered frequent breakdowns, unplanned downtime and high replacement costs. The client asked Meritus for a technical, evidence-based sourcing solution.

Approach: from buying parts to engineering the supply chain

We used a structured Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control method:

  • Define and measure: failure history, maintenance reports and operating data from the plant.
  • Analyse: root cause analysis with 5 Whys and a 4M check (man, machine, method, material) to separate design issues from manufacturing and quality problems.
  • Improve: a controlled RFQ and supplier audit programme focused on total cost of ownership and reliability, not unit price.
  • Control: an inspection and documentation plan to keep the new solution stable over time.

The technical solution

Meritus specified and sourced a horizontal multistage, self-priming pump package engineered for the plant's duty:

  • Service: wastewater with light suspended solids
  • Duty point: about 7 m³/h at 60 m head, operating range about 4 to 12 m³/h and 30 to 110 m
  • Wetted parts: stainless steel, minimum SS304, for casings, impellers and shaft
  • Motor: IE3 efficiency, IP55, 4-pole, 400 to 420 V, 50 Hz
  • Performance tested to ISO 9906 with Q-H, power, efficiency and NPSHr curves, GA drawings and a defined spares package

Meritus managed both incoming and outgoing inspections, verifying dimensions, materials, performance data and documentation before shipment and before site acceptance.

Results

  • Expected breakage-related cost reduction of about USD 1 million in the first year
  • No early-life failures on delivered batches to date
  • Stable, repeatable supply from a qualified, audited manufacturer
  • Ongoing orders as the plant standardises on the new package

Behind it is a hands-on sourcing and QA team in China with two decades of experience across projects, sourcing and quality, focused on safe, compliant, traceable products and risk-based supplier selection.
