Datasheet Passed, Field Failed: Screen Panels and Hydraulic Hoses From China
August 25, 2026 · 2 min read
Two Chinese-sourced items where the datasheet looked right and field life came in at half the specification. Both were wear parts on active mine sites. Both passed pre-award document review. Both failed inside 90 days.
Case 1: polyurethane screen panels for a dewatering deck
Specified: Shore A90 hardness, MDI-based polyurethane, 25 mm thick, target life six months at a 40 t/h feed rate.
What arrived: hardness measured on site averaged Shore A82, not A90. A cross-section showed a rubber substrate with a polyurethane wear layer bonded on top, not solid MDI polyurethane. The datasheet was not false in a strict sense, because the surface layer was polyurethane. What it did not say was that the substrate was rubber. The bond line failed after 11 weeks of wet operation, and panel life came in at 2.7 months instead of six.
Hold points that would have caught it before shipment:
- Shore A hardness on three random panels per pallet, not one certificate covering the whole batch.
- Cross-section inspection of one panel per production run to confirm solid construction.
- Abrasion test on the first article (DIN 53516, now DIN ISO 4649), with a retained sample compared against the shipment.
Case 2: SAE 100R2 hydraulic hoses for 90-tonne haul trucks
Specified: two-wire braid, 27.5 MPa working pressure, 110 MPa minimum burst to SAE J517, abrasion-resistant cover, minus 40 to plus 100 °C.
What arrived: burst tests on samples pulled from the shipment averaged 78 MPa, below specification. The cover passed abrasion testing at ambient temperature but cracked at minus 15 °C, on a site that runs at minus 25 °C in winter. The hose had been made to a Chinese GB/T equivalent that permits lower burst values and does not require a cold-flex test.
Hold points:
- Burst pressure test on 5 percent of the shipment, not one sample from one production batch.
- Low-temperature flexibility test to ISO 10619-2 (formerly ISO 4672) on the delivered lot.
- Certificate lot correlation to the braid wire heat number.
The pattern across both cases
The paper was compliant. The shop floor was not. The gap did not surface until the material was in service.
Layer one is the named supplier, audited on paper. Layer two is where that supplier buys its raw material. Layer three is the shop floor on the shift the batch is made. Outcomes are decided at layer three, and that is where inspection and test plan work has to sit. More on this in Layer three: where supply chain outcomes are decided.
Related products: screening and separation media and mobile fleet parts and consumables.
If you are sourcing wear parts from China for an active mine site, send the inspection and test plan before award for a second review.
