Structural Fasteners From China: Small Parts, Big Risk
December 7, 2025 · 2 min read
In steel structures, infrastructure and construction, a project is only as strong as its bolts, nuts and washers. When fasteners come from China, the risk is usually not price. It is specification drift and poor traceability.
Problems we see
- Wrong property class: 5.8 delivered where 8.8 or 10.9 was ordered.
- Bolt, nut and washer not tested as a set, although EN 14399 preloadable assemblies require it.
- Hot-dip galvanising or other coatings applied without control of hydrogen embrittlement risk on high-strength parts.
- Mixed batches, and certificates that do not match the actual shipment.
How Meritus handles fasteners in China
- Specification: source to ISO 898-1 for bolts and ISO 898-2 for nuts, EN 14399 for structural preloadable assemblies, and the project specification for structural and anchor bolts.
- Manufacturing audit: heat treatment records, and mechanical tests including tensile, proof load, wedge tensile and hardness.
- Coating control: hot-dip galvanising to ISO 10684, mechanical zinc or zinc flake systems, with hydrogen embrittlement managed for property class 10.9 and above, including baking after electroplating where it is used.
- Before shipment: pre-shipment checks, lot traceability and EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certificates.
- Critical scopes: third-party or class witnessing arranged in China.
Who this is for
Steel fabricators and bridge builders, EPC contractors and contractors on infrastructure and energy projects, and anyone who needs value from Chinese fasteners without gambling on quality.
Related: industrial fasteners and bolts, nuts, washers and assemblies, socket cap screws and structural steel beams.
