Steel Cord Conveyor Belts From China: Lock the Specification, Then Inspect It

April 20, 2026 · 2 min read

If you are sourcing steel cord conveyor belts for a mine, a steel mill or a bulk-handling terminal, the problem is familiar. One supplier quotes ST1000, another ST2500, a third quotes "equivalent". Cover grades get mixed up. Adhesion values disappear from the datasheet. Nobody mentions fire resistance until it is too late.

Some of the best belt factories in China do not show up in a web search. Matching a specification to the right mill, rather than the loudest one, is where a local partner earns its keep.

What to lock into the specification

  • Tensile class to DIN 22131 or ISO 15236, selected to duty, for example ST2500, ST3150, ST4000 or ST5400, with cord construction defined.
  • Cover grade matched to the service: abrasion-resistant classes such as W, X and Y under DIN, or H, D and L under ISO 10247, plus heat-, oil- or fire-resistant compounds where the duty needs them.
  • Fire resistance and antistatic performance where required: ISO 340 flame testing, EN ISO 284 electrical conductivity, AS 4606 for underground coal in Australia, or MSHA approval for US mines.
  • Cord-to-cover adhesion tested to ISO 7623, with splice efficiency verified where the duty justifies it.
  • System data: pulley diameters, trough angles, splice design and elongation limits fixed in the order, so premature wear is designed out.

Retain golden samples, and word the purchase order so compound or cord design cannot be swapped without approval.

How to verify it

Third-party inspection can face conflicts of interest when the inspector is engaged or influenced by the factory. A buy-side model adds lab-backed checks:

  • Incoming rubber: Shore A hardness, specific gravity, Mooney viscosity and rheometer cure curves.
  • Periodic lab tests: tensile and elongation, adhesion, abrasion to ISO 4649, and flame and antistatic tests to ISO 340 and ISO 284.
  • Traceability: batch traceability and splice-kit control, with witnessed calendering and cord pick-count checks when the risk justifies it.
  • Pre-shipment QC at the vulcanising press, not after the container has sailed.

A programme example

For a mining and steel client that needed a predictable path to qualify and source 2800 mm steel cord belts, Meritus ran on-site audits, segmented the vendor panel by duty (heavy haul, heat-resistant, oil-resistant, fire-resistant and antistatic), and used controlled trial lots with golden-sample acceptance and parallel lab validation. Price and lead-time ladders, warranty alignment and dual-region capacity gave the client predictable lead times and one point of accountability for sourcing, vendor performance and QA.
