Specifying Blast Abrasive: Write ISO 11126-10 Into the Specification

Most blast abrasive is sold on hardness and mesh size. The standard asks for considerably more.

What ISO 11126-10 covers

ISO 11126-10 is the international specification for almandite garnet blast-cleaning abrasive. Its requirements go well beyond a grade name:

Grading: a particle size range with limits on oversize and undersize, not just a nominal mesh label.
Hardness on the Mohs scale, by a defined test method.
Moisture: measured, not assumed.
Conductivity of the aqueous extract: the broad check for soluble contamination.
Water-soluble chlorides: what transfers to the steel and lifts a coating from underneath.
Free crystalline silica: limited to 1 percent, determined by X-ray diffraction. It decides whether an abrasive may be used at all on regulated sites.

Each requirement has a test method in the ISO 11127 series, including particle size distribution (ISO 11127-2), hardness by glass slide test (ISO 11127-4), moisture (ISO 11127-5), conductivity (ISO 11127-6) and water-soluble chlorides (ISO 11127-7). A supplier either runs them or does not.

What to put in the purchase specification

Name the standard: almandite garnet abrasive to ISO 11126-10, with the grade required.
Require a certificate for every batch with the ISO 11127 results for that lot, not a generic datasheet on request.
Check the free crystalline silica result against your site rules as well as the standard.

Writing the standard into the specification is the shortest sentence that does the most work.
