Sourcing FPSO and FLNG MRO Parts From China Without Inheriting the Risk

April 14, 2026 · 2 min read

Floating production units such as FPSOs, FLNGs and FSOs operate in some of the most demanding environments on earth, from deep water off Brazil and Guyana to West Africa and Southeast Asia. They need a constant, reliable supply of maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) items to keep production running safely.

What maintenance teams need

A failed valve, a corroded exchanger tube bundle or a worn pump impeller can stop production. The recurring MRO list includes:

  • Valves: gate, globe, ball, check and butterfly, in carbon steel and corrosion-resistant alloys
  • Pipe fittings, flanges and gaskets to ASME, API and EN standards
  • Heat exchanger components and tube bundles
  • Pressure vessel internals and spare parts
  • Pumps, mechanical seals and rotating equipment spares
  • Electrical and instrumentation components
  • Structural steel, plate and fabricated items
  • Safety equipment and PPE

The traditional supply chain for these items often means long lead times, several intermediaries and premium pricing from Western OEMs.

Why China for offshore MRO

  • Cost. Savings against Western OEM equivalents are frequently significant, provided quality and certification are controlled.
  • Capacity. China has a very large base of specialised foundries, forges, machine shops and fabrication yards producing to tight tolerances.
  • Class approvals. Leading Chinese manufacturers hold approvals from DNV, ABS, Bureau Veritas, Lloyd's Register and China Classification Society.
  • Speed. With the right partner on the ground, lead times can be shortened through direct factory relationships.

The risks

  • Inconsistency between quoted specifications and delivered goods
  • Counterfeit or unverifiable material certificates
  • Communication barriers and time-zone gaps
  • No pre-shipment inspection or factory acceptance testing
  • Documentation that does not meet class or operator requirements

How Meritus supports offshore operations

From Shanghai, Meritus sources industrial equipment and MRO items for offshore oil and gas. Our scope covers technical specification review and supplier matching, factory audits and qualification, manufacturing follow-up and progress reporting, factory acceptance testing and pre-shipment inspection, full documentation packages (material certificates, test reports and class certificates) and consolidated shipping.

We work with FPSO and FLNG operators, EPC contractors and maintenance teams, from a single emergency spare to a complete package for a planned turnaround.

Related: FSO and FPSO, industrial valves, pipe flanges and fittings, shell and tube heat exchangers, centrifugal pumps to API 610 and process transmitters and sensors.
