Buying Port Cranes From China: Why Procurement Needs a Partner on the Ground

April 30, 2026 · 3 min read

Chinese-built ship-to-shore (STS), rubber-tyred gantry (RTG), rail-mounted gantry (RMG) and mobile harbour cranes now operate in many of the world's terminals, on the strength of sharp pricing, fast delivery and very large fabrication capacity. For port procurement teams the question is no longer whether to consider China. It is how to buy from China without inheriting avoidable technical, documentation and cybersecurity risk.

A crane project is judged on far more than capital cost. Boards, regulators and insurers ask about lifecycle availability, cyber exposure, type approval, and whether the documentation behind each crane will stand up to a 20 to 30 year operating life. Those answers are hard to get right from thousands of kilometres away while the team juggles other projects.

Where crane projects from China go wrong

Most problems are not caused by the basic steelwork or drive packages. They come from gaps in definition, follow-up and coordination:

  • Catalogue-based specifications that do not match the real vessel mix and yard layout, leading to underpowered or overstressed cranes.
  • Incomplete or late documentation, such as as-built drawings, welding records, test dossiers and type approval, sometimes discovered months after delivery.
  • Ambiguity around remote access, software baselines and cyber controls in the control system package.
  • Time-zone, language and working-culture gaps between the OEM, class society, logistics providers and the port, which stretch the internal team during critical milestones.

All of these are fixable, but only if someone is close enough to the suppliers to see issues early and focused enough to close them systematically.

How Meritus de-risks crane procurement from China

1. Front-end definition and supplier screening. We help translate terminal requirements into China-ready specifications and bid packages, then shortlist OEMs and fabricators that can genuinely meet them, checking references and prior projects and aligning certification routes and class requirements before tender.

2. On-the-ground quality and documentation control. Our quality team visits yards, monitors fabrication and welding, witnesses key tests and pushes for complete, consistent documentation at each milestone. Recommendations on progress payments are tied to objective evidence: approved drawings, NDT reports, FAT records, certificates and type approval packages.

3. Interface, logistics and lifecycle coordination. We coordinate with the OEM, class, logistics providers and your site team on shipping windows, customs documentation and preservation for long sea voyages. Working in the suppliers' time zone, day-to-day issues are closed quickly while procurement, engineering and operations stay aligned through one channel.

You still capture the cost and schedule advantages of Chinese crane manufacturing, with independent oversight whose only job is to make the project work for you.

When to engage

The best moment is before the RFQ or RFP is issued, so specifications, evaluation criteria and contract language reflect the real risk profile of buying cranes from China. If a project is already under way with quality, documentation or coordination problems, a targeted gap assessment and on-site recovery plan is the next step.
